THE DARK OAR features my English translations of poems originally written in German by Paul Celan self-translated into French. Celan translated some of his German poems in a correspondence with his wife Gisèle Celan-Lestrange between 1954 and his tragic death in 1970. The collection includes the original German, Celan's French translations and my translations of the French into English. I'm honoured to be the first to publish these translations from the French and to contribute to our knowledge of Celan's oeuvre.
